28th July 2010: St. Luke's Reading Group
meets at 8.00pm in the Church Lounge to discuss 'A Town like Alice'. Jean Paget is just twenty years old and working in Malaya when the Japanese invasion begins. She is captured and joins a group of women and children forced to march for miles through the jungle. They run into an Australian prisoner, Joe Harman, who helps them steal some food and is horrifically punished. After the war, Jean tracks Joe down...
